AFC Oldham’s ambitious plans for a junior football team are off to a promising start as the U10s team secured their first-ever win.
In only their second game, AFC Oldham U10s won 3-2 in their away game against Ordsall Juniors.
On Saturday, Oscar Barker and Maxwell Newton bagged the first two goals for Oldham in the first half.
Ordsall Junior player number 12 then scored two goals in quick succession after halftime, but Maxwell Newton scored the winning goal late in the second half.
The youngsters show great promise for a resurgence in junior football in Oldham and have been praised for their “great team spirit” and “perseverance” by AFC Oldham.
AFC Oldham wrote on Facebook: “The smiles on the faces of both the children and parents at the end of the game is the reason we are committed to bringing junior football back to AFC Oldham.”
The junior team have been training together for months but have only recently been working with their new coach, Anthony Hall, who started to coach the team a matter of weeks ago in May.
Reacting to the victory, Mr Hall said: “While at this age and level the result and scoreline don’t really matter, to see the smiles on the player’s faces at full time was fantastic.
“We have such a great set of players here with brilliant attitudes.
“They are always wanting to learn and develop whilst continuously putting in the effort and looking after each other, which are great characteristics to have.
“The win on Saturday was our first and will be a great confidence booster for the players moving forward.”
The win comes as AFC Oldham outlines its newfound dedication to bring junior football back to the club.
For a number of years, junior football had fallen wayside – but the U10’s win on Saturday shows the level of commitment the club is injecting into the next generation of players.
Under the stewardship of development officer Andy Rowlandson, Junior Secretary Mark Jackson and volunteer Dale Harris, AFC Oldham has ambitious plans to develop the junior set-up at the club.
